Anjoe’s founder, Dr. Stephen J. Ryan, has been a licensed physical therapist for 28 years. He received his master of science and doctoral degrees in Physical Therapy from Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) in Philadelphia, PA.
Steve received an advanced certification in manual therapy, with an emphasis on spine rehabilitation, as a graduate of the “Kaiser Permanente Physical Therapy Fellowship in Advanced Orthopedic Manual Therapy,” allowing him to be honored as a fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT). Additionally, he is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a strength and conditioning specialist.
Steve’s practice now focuses entirely on patient care, both in his clinic and at a local surgery center, where he and his team provide physical therapy for patients whom have had outpatient hip and knee replacements. However, along with his practice, he has been an educator throughout the majority of his career, on faculty at universities both nationally and internationally. Most recently, he was an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, where he taught anatomy and orthopedics to the physical therapy and medical students. Also until recently, he was on faculty in the Department of Dance at Mills College in Oakland, CA, where he taught kinesiology.
Though he works with people throughout the lifespan, with his many years of experience in multiple areas of physical therapy, including orthopedic, geriatric, and neurologic rehabilitation, Steve enjoys most working with older adults, teaching them how to protect, care for, and strengthen their bodies, and helping them live their fullest life.
Importantly, especially in these divisive times, Steve welcomes all peoples to his practice, where he treats everyone with cultural humility.
Hailing from just outside of Philadelphia, PA, he has lived in Oakland for the last 20 years. Steve is a former gymnast and former professional dancer, and enjoys many activities, including sailing, skiing, hiking, dancing, cooking, traveling, motorcycling, and photography.
